JUNETEENTH: A LESSON IN FREEDOM, LOVE, AND HUMAN DIGNITY

Juneteenth - Celebrating freedom, honoring our history, inspiring our future

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth—a day that reminds us that freedom is one of God’s greatest gifts, and that every human being is created with value, purpose, and dignity.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved men, women, and children in Texas finally learned they were free. Imagine that moment. Imagine living in darkness and suddenly hearing words that changed everything:

“You are free.”

Juneteenth is more than a historical event. It is a reminder that truth eventually overcomes injustice, that hope survives even the darkest seasons, and that freedom is worth fighting for.

But freedom is not only about chains being broken from our hands. Sometimes the chains we carry are homelessness, addiction, poverty, hunger, loneliness, despair, fear, or hopelessness.

Every day at Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, we meet people who are searching for their own Juneteenth moment—a moment when they discover that their past does not define their future, that their mistakes do not determine their worth, and that there is still hope ahead.

For more than a century, DRMM has stood beside those who have been forgotten, rejected, or overlooked. We believe every person deserves a second chance, a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, an opportunity to rebuild, and someone who believes in them when they cannot believe in themselves.

Juneteenth teaches us that progress happens when people choose love over hate, unity over division, and compassion over indifference.

As we reflect on this important day, let us remember that the greatest way to honor history is not simply to study it—but to learn from it. Let us build communities where every person is treated with dignity, where differences are respected, where hope is shared freely, and where no one is left behind.

Because freedom is not complete until everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Today, may we choose kindness. May we choose understanding. May we choose compassion. May we choose love.

And may we never forget that when we lift one another up, we all rise together.

Happy Juneteenth.
