Using a data-informed process, the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM) develops strategies to implement innovative programs for people in need. This annual report uses data to
generate a thorough analysis of needs in our community. It demonstrates the ongoing need for programs that address homelessness, drug problems, basic needs such as food, clothing and
housing, and services for youth and unemployed adults in the Detroit Wayne County area as well as Macomb and St. Clair counties.

Homelessness, mental health issues and substance use disorder hurt many lives around us. Data shows how many guests DRMM provided housing and treatment, and how the Coronavirus
(COVID-19) impacted our guests, our organization and our community.

Summer is upon us, bringing thousands of people through the Mission doors each day, including families with little children . . .

That’s because when school is out, many boys and girls lose access to the meals they need and rely on. Their parents, whose budgets are already spread thin, struggle to put food on the table.

Other neighbors in need have lost paychecks and jobs as part of the lingering economic impact of the pandemic.

The need is so great, that the Mission must be prepared to serve nearly 4,000 meals EVERY DAY this summer.

Chandra, a neighbor who turned to us for help, recently shared a heartbreaking story. She was swindled by her landlord and evicted from her home—in the middle of the pandemic!

Thanks to support from friends who support DRMM, we were able to offer her safe shelter, meals, and much more while she rebuilt her life.

She says, “I was homeless during the pandemic. I had nowhere to go, nothing to eat. They fed me here at DRMM. It was only through the grace of God I made it through.”

For the sake of neighbors like Chandra—including hungry children and their frightened parents, seniors, veterans, and others—please make a gift right now to provide meals, help, and hope for people in great need now and all summer long.

Thank you for giving generously now to help care for our most vulnerable neighbors, making them stay Safe Over Summer!

“I was working in a warehouse and got badly injured when they dropped seven pallets on my body,” Sarita says. The accident injured her back and made it impossible for her to work.

With the pandemic raging across the nation, Sarita’s family was unable to come from overseas to help. Isolated and in pain, a new worry appeared—her worker’s comp didn’t come. Facing homelessness, she made arrangements for a new home for her two dogs and parakeet, her closest companions.

Devastated by her helpless situation and the loss of her best animal friends, Sarita came close to taking her own life. That’s when a caring soul intervened and helped her find the shelter and other life-changing help she needed at DRMM’s Genesis House. “It’s like a sanctuary here,” she says.

Sarita is healing and looking forward to a fresh start in life, but she will always remember the caring staff at DRMM and the donors who made her recovery possible. “I would like to tell people who support the Mission that I will never forget you. You have been so gracious. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Thank you for making a gift today to help DRMM reach our neighbors with meals and more during their darkest days. With your ongoing partnership, men and women like Sarita will find help and healing as they rebuild their lives!

Of all the uncertainties ushered into her life with COVID-19, homelessness was Veronica’s least worry. She worked hard at the local pharmacy, and plenty of shifts were available as her coworkers opted to shelter in place.

But when her landlord passed away and the property was sold, the new owner wanted to earn more from the property. Despite being current on her rent, Veronica was told she and her son had to leave. Unable to pay the steep deposits required to get a new rental, a hotel became her family’s temporary home.

“It was hard and very stressful. I wasn’t sleeping much,” Veronica says. “I was working a lot of overtime to make sure I had enough to feed him and [afford] childcare.”

It was an answered prayer when DRMM said they had room for Veronica and her son. “I thank God for DRMM and the staff. They’re great and really try to make everyone as comfortable as possible.”

Veronica is counting the days until they are able to live independently, but she will never forget the safety net caring donors provided for her and her son. “I’d like to thank you because we needed [shelter] and it’s greatly appreciated. It’s wonderful that people are willing to share.”

On behalf of Veronica and her son, thank you for making a gift today to help other families and individuals who are turning to DRMM for food, help, and hope to overcome homelessness and other hardship. You are a great blessing to our neighbors in need!
